Congrats to my man Illmind

Illmind won the Philadelphia Red Bull Big Tune last night. For those that aren’t familiar with this is event, it’s a national beat battle sponsored by Red Bull. I was the winner of the Houston battle last year and went on to the Seattle finals Nov 1st 2007. If the event comes through your city, you should definatly try and make it.

A beat a day……or more

Posted in production stories on May 21, 2008 by theare

I try to make atleast 1 joint a day. It’s tough these days when you have a Daughter that naps less and a house to hold down. The fact is, I’ve been making beats so long that it’s just a way of life for me and if I don’t get it done, my day isn’t complete. I remember at one point last year I was cranking out 3 beats a day. Things were just rollin. I truely feel that if you want to get i done in this industry, you really have to make music all the time. If your making a beat every couple of weeks, thats just not gonna cut it. I remember giving artist beat cd’s with 3 to 5 beats on it. Sometimes thats ok for some artist cause they can’t seem to sort through to many joints and make their mind up. But, funny thing is when i started my beat vols with 25 – 30 joints on them, it worked better. Of course the music had to hold weight as well but with many joints on it, I guess it just better’d the odds for me. Bottom line, make music as much as your life will allow. If you work a 9 to 5, that just means you will have to work alittle harder to create time.

Rubbish

You know, I can’t help but feel like every artist in the mainstream is putting out the same recycled bullshit. There’s alot of artist coming with new albums soon and with each leak, I get more disgusted. Nothing sounds that good to me. The industry is just like this rediculous smart water trend. Vitamin water, smart water, antioxidant water. Are you kidding me?? Each artist with a new look and a new pitch but doing the same shit everytime.  I guess with a major industry slump, every artist and their labels are running for the hills and are deathly affraid of taking chances.

When I recently spent 3 months in Battery studios, I could’nt help notice that alot of artist that came through were a bit confused as to what they really wanted to do. “I want some pop shit” , “no wait, I want some R&B shit”, no, wait “I want some Rhianna pop/R&B shit”. They all just wanted to get a piece of what the latest hot artist was doing and that only added to the confusion. I just wish that artist and producers would take it upon themselves to create the “New”. Not just different but independent thinking. Taking chances, going against the grain a little bit. Hey, the label is’nt really gonna push your shit that hard anyway right? Why not take some chances?

My man Zumbi from Zion I has this pic on his myspace. This is when we were on tour over seas in 2002. We took this pic in Paris at Basilique du Sacré Coeur. The Paris show was really crazy. It was on a huge boat that was turned into a venue. The fans were insane! Amplive, Deuce, Me, Zumbi and D.U.S.T.
